The mask 'defines the area of the image that you want the model to edit, using fully transparent pixels (alpha of zero) in those areas', and 'the mask must be a PNG file and have the same dimensions as the input image'. Opaque pixels mark what stays, so an opaque editable area inverts the mask. JPEG carries no alpha channel to express transparency. A mask cropped to the background no longer matches the input dimensions.
